I have recd your several letters, including that of the 30^th [undecipherable] —— Be assured that nothing has hinderd me from replying to your former letters sooner but that often prevents men from performing [strikethrough: many] their official duties of a [undecipherable] — I mean too much business. I cannot say when any office may turn up that might be suitable for you as a clergyman to accept, and to think it would be perfectly proper for the President to appoint you. You will perceive the delicacy of the thing as it respects both, at the same time you may always rely on my good offices, as far as I myself can, whenever they can be exercised to assist your wishes.
