Your letters of the 15.^th 19.^th & 22 instant I have received — I now inclose you receipts for — the ordnance detachment for the last December past, amount thirty four dollars & 15 cents — Being [undecipherable] of Joshua Nelson's [undecipherable] receipts for each paid them for corn for the four public horses, amount twenty four dollars and [undecipherable] cents — [undecipherable] McLean's account [undecipherable] receipt for each paid him for driving the said public horses, amount sixteen dollars; which account [I] [undecipherable] accompanied with a copy of a note I received from the Secretary of War relative to providing a teamster — Henry [undecipherable]'s receipt for each paid him for the [undecipherable] of the garrison, amount ten dollars & 72 cents — and [undecipherable] R. Anderson's enlistment with his receipt for sixteen dollars I paid him his bounty money — I also inclose you Thomas Hughes's account for blacksmith work, dated the [undecipherable] of last December, and an account of [undecipherable] I. [undecipherable] dated the [undecipherable] instant for his wages for driving the public team — I advanced the [undecipherable] to [undecipherable] of Nelson for the [undecipherable] to McLean for driving. The [undecipherable], as their circumstances would not admit their waiting until I received the money for them. Very few persons in the vicinity of this garrison, who have articles to dispose of, or work for the [undecipherable] [undecipherable], but are in immediate want of payment. On which account articles can be purchased here from 25 to 33[undecipherable] [undecipherable: per cent?] lower for the cash [undecipherable: payer?] on the delivery of the articles than by giving due bills and taking receipts as for the money. This last mode I never adopted. The Secretary of War has an estimate of the expense attending the keeping the public horses here. I advanced the money to M^r. Mansfield (the [undecipherable]) for the [undecipherable] taxes, as it was necessary to pay him immediately — he lives some distance from this place — I am, Sir, Your obed^t serv^t, Geo.
