Sam'l Hodgdon Esq
Sir
[Y]ours of th[e] inst[an]t was duly rec'd, since which I have seen Cap't. Turner, & perceive his silence while at Philadelphia, respecting M. Sargeant's engagement was the mere result of inadvertency — Before rec't of this you will have learnt from C. Turner the exact state of the business in question, & that though the note contemplated bears his signature, it was in truth issued in behalf of Col. Sargeant & in conformity to M. Turner's & Mess. Crackers introductions, I have drawn on you a 90 d[ay] sight, fav. of Joseph Blake for 692 Doll. & I think, 55. cents being m[undecipherable] of principal and interest of the note — This Draft [undecipherable: enclosed?] after such representations as will have been to you on the subject, will I hope be duly honored — Especially when I assure you I have no other interest in the transaction than having advanced the am't of the note, as Cap't. Turner's friend in his absence — The note was left with me for collection, and is now in the hands of Mess. Crackers, to be retained by them as agents of Col. Sargeant on pay't of money [undecipherable] draft — In haste y'r Most Obed. Serv't
