John P. Duvall's defense against charges of misappropriated funds
Document 1798John P. Duvall entreats Simmons to defer any further proceedings against him until he has the opportunity to defend himself against charges that he misappropriated funds. He assures Simmons that he paid every shilling provided by the US to the men whose service to the country was being compensated. Intends to be in Philadelphia next summer and has written to Congressman Macon on the subject. No man has ever complained for want of his money; thought the muster and payrolls was sufficient. Some he took receipts from; some he did not. Asks Simmons to send a copy of payrolls and muster
