[108] Secretary of War Jan 12 1793 Sir, Col^t Hawkins expressed a desire to me from and such further information as he might think deserving notice respecting the unfortunate affairs of the Cheels which he related to you in his letter of the 4^th inst he being much harrased and perplexed by the indians as nothing particular has come to my knowledge since more than is detailed in his diary which he left with me. I have thought it not amiss to forward a transcript of the whole during his rout which may serve to shew the disposition of the indians & the many difficulties the Col^t had to encounter on the occasion — I am sorry to add that for want of any tolerable accomodations at this inclement pason I have not been able to make any progress in the arrangement of my acct. and we are much pused and harrassed with the agents from the frontier towns to receive their presents, all with an idle gang after them who would sooner travel 2 or 3 hundred mile to receive a present of a blanket than attend to their hunting we are destitute of many good provisions at this season and much censured for not having a supply of gunpowder at the their hunting season. Col^t Hawkins left this the 6 inst attended by the Com^rs for marking the lones between the state of Georgia & the Creek nation. & expects to return here on about three weeks from the time he left it [XFQ04]
