War Office, 9th January 1798
Sir
As the Secretary of War is about making an addition to the marine estimate, he submits to your consideration whether the estimate of rations for the Navy which you Master to the Secretary of War the 10th of January 1795 be such as the same rations can be now obtained for; in that estimate, the daily ration is stated at 14½ Cents ꝑ Week, but Provisions of all Kinds having risen in price since that Period, it may not be improper to have an estimate of the rations Prepared, which the Secretary of War hopes you will be kind enough to favour him with as early as possible
and am Sir
with respect
your obedient Servt
Josiah Fox.
