[John Shannon's Deposition.] City of Philadelphia Sc Before me Hilary Baker [undecipherable] Mayor of the city of Philadelphia appeared John Shannon, who being duly sworn deposed that during the transactions which were carried on by John Connor and others in the year 1796 for the purpose of obtaining soldiers rights from the United States a certain John Hindman then and now a clerk in the office of the Register of the Treasury of the United States was personally intimate and frequently with the said John Connor at the house of this deponent where [strikethrough: the said Connor the [undecipherable]] — as he understood from the conversation of Connor and the conduct of the said Hindman he the said Hindman supplied the said Connor with information to enable him and those concerned with him to defraud the United States by personating or causing to be personated the soldiers who had claims on the United States and by forging powers of attorney from them which information as it could only be procured from a person having access to the offices was especially necessary for the prosecution of their said designs — that the papers marked A. & indorsed by the Mayor and this deponent was delivered by the said Hindman to the deponent at his own house to be delivered to the said Connor — that the paper marked B. and in like manner indorsed was in far as relates to the writing with black lead written in the deponent's presence by the said Hindman at his the said Hindman's house and the deponent was by him desired to give it to Connor — but the alteration in the name of [undecipherable] [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] and was originally William Carman that the other two papers marked C. and D. and in like manner indorsed were [strikethrough: attested] found by the deponent [strikethrough: from] among the papers of the said Connor and are as he verily believes the proper hand writing of the said Hindman — That Connor to the deponent's knowledge at one time gave the said Hindman one hundred dollars which he said he owed him and this deponent by Connor's order at another time by Connor's order paid him twenty five dollars which he said and both acknowledged was the said Hindman's share of [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] monies which by means of their fraudulent practices of the kind above described they had drawn from the United States, and also twenty dollars which Hindman said must be paid to another clerk in the said office — & must be laid out in a suit of clothes for him.
