[133] The Hon^ble Sec^y of War Sir Accountants Office December 27 1797 Mr. Samuel Lewis S^r Clerk in your Office has from time to time received considerable Sums of money, on your Warrants on account of the contingent Expenses of the Indian Department, War Department & Ordnance Department amounting to 14050 Dollars up to the 1^st January 1796 & I have called on him personally as well as by letter to produce a Statement of his Accon that the proper sum may be entered to his Credit, to which he has made no reply — As I am waiting for his Statement to Compleat the remarks in the M^s back of the Receivers of public monies to be laid before Congress in a few Days I have to request you will be pleased to direct him to furnish me with the Statement required to enable me to make the necessary remarks — I am S^r W^m Simmons Acct The Hon^ble Dwight Foster Sir Department of War Accountants Office Decem 28 1797 The Muster Rolls of the 1^st Reg^t Light Dragoons commanded by Col^o Anthony Walton White in the Years 1780 & 1781 are not on file in this Office, but I have always understood the Musters for that Period were lost in Action to the Southward, consequently cannot ascertain the Services claimed by Robert Simons Corner of Lieutenant neither can I find by inquiry at the War Office that any person of his name was ever commissioned an Officer in said Corps — I am &c W^m Simmons Acct
