I Ethelfred Ballard do solemnly swear to bear true allegiance to the United States of America, and to serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whomsoever, and to observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States of America, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the rules and articles of war, Sworn before me this twenty sixth day of December 1797 Joseph Green Jr. Ethelfred Ballard [No 11] [Ethelred Ballard] [C. Ballard] [Ethelred Ballard by] I Ethelfred Ballard do acknowledge to have voluntarily Inlisted myself as a soldier in the 4^th United States Regt. in the service of the United States, for the term of five years from the Seventeenth day of December 1797 unless sooner discharged, upon the terms mentioned in an act, entitled, "An act for regulating the military establishment of the United States," passed the 30th of April, 1790, and "An act for making further provision for the protection of the frontiers of the United States," passed the fifth of March, 1792, and "An act for regulating the pay and rations of the militia and military troops of the United States," passed the 2d of January, 1795, and an act, entitled, "An act for lengthening the time of enlistments," passed 30th of May, 1796, and that I have had read unto me the rules and articles of war against mutiny and desertion, and relative to the administration of justice, as witness my hand this Seventeenth day of December 1797 one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven Witnefs, [undecipherable] Salmon Ensⁿ — Ethelfred Ballard Be it known that the above said Ethelred Ballard has Inlisted himself in place of John Powell who is to be discharged as soon as the approbation of the Secretary of War can be obtained authorising the said Exchange, This Inlistment to be considered perfectly obligatory on the said Ethelred Ballard untill the S^d Powell Joins the Regt. —
