Sam^l of W Simmons Act^t --- The Hon^ble The Sec^y of War Accountants Office December 13 1797 Sir/ An account has been presented at this Office for payment — for services of John Carren attending & taking care of Fort Washington in the State of Rhode Island from 1 Jan^y 1796 to 1 Aug 1797. @ 100 Dollars $ annum is 158.50. — It appears by a letter from the Secretary of War to John & Bofs of the 7 July 1796 that he was to enquire of M^r Carr, on what conditions he would undertake the care of the Works & publick property appertaining thereto — To which Mr. Bofs replies under date of the 14 July following That M^r Carr is willing to take charge of the property & Works on the Island for the sum of One hundred Dollars $ annum — as no answer of the Secretary of War to this letter appears on record I have to request that you will be pleased to inform me to what Period he is to be considered in Service and at what rate of pay, That I may be enabled to examine the Account and report the same accordingly — Sam^l W Simmons A^t
