I enclose you a letter addressed to Lieut Peter Marks of the 3d regiment, directing him to place in your hands for examination his account & Vouchers for the expenditure of a large sum of Money he received from Capt Edward Buttler for the recruiting Service, and any balance remaining unexpended to refund immediately to you. You will be pleased after perusing the letter to seal it and cause it to be delivered to me. — The Sum he received from Capt Buttler is 1773 Dollars. 230 of this Sum was refunded by Ensign Smith, leaves a balance of fifteen Hundred and forty three Dollars to be accounted for, he has also received three Hundred Dollars from this Office on account [strikethrough: of his] You will as early as may be inform me of the Situation of his accounts after he receives my letter?
