Georgetown Nov. 18th 1797
Sir,
Agreeable to your request of the 14 Inst. I have enclosed my Recruiting Account with the Vouchers, containing the Enlistments I have made at this Post. I received in May last two hundred Dollars for the recruiting Service; previous to my writing on the 2d of this Month for more money, I had disbursed the whole thereof; Since which a Detachment of twelve men has been made to the Orders of Col. Rochefontaine, consisting principally of New Recruits who had not but a small part of their Bounty. I tho't it reasonable they should receive at least ten Dollars thereof each. I was under the necessity of advancing about fifty Dollars, that, with what had been paid before and the premium amount to 307 Dollars & 10 Cents, and 10 Cent, which I request may be forwarded to me. So some more money [undecipherable] I have [undecipherable] three Men this month to whom I have not had it in my power to make any payment of Bounty. —— And I have no duplicate Receipt from William Goode I have forwarded his Enlistment with the Original Receipt thereon.
I am at present unable to transmit my first recruiting account, owing to the want of some material Vouchers lost or mislaid. If I should not be fortunate enough to recover them, perhaps it may be necessary for my personal attendance at Philadelphia for the settlement thereof. —
I believe there is no great balance due per or against me — altho' I have not [undecipherable] a number of Recruits, yet I was obliged to disburse considerable sums in the Quartermasters line owing to the want of regular Contractors &c.
I am Sir
very respectfully
yr very humble Servt.
