War office 8 Nov^r 1797. Sir. I inclose you duplicates of my letters of the 20th of Oct^r ult. and 5^th of Nov^r ult. The present is merely to cover eight hundred dollars in Bank notes of the Bank of the United States [undecipherable] a proportion of which you will be pleased to [undecipherable] in silver dollars with the officers commanding the several posts on the Ohio and lakes and Missifsippi north of the Ohio, with copies orders to their respective commandants to pay the sum mentioned in my letter of the 16th of [undecipherable], to every Indian who may deliver to them any military or [undecipherable] with his talk and papers as stated in my said letter. You will accompany this deposit with such instructions as will enable the commandants sufficiently to understand the object. You will particularly direct them to take duplicate receipts for the money and such other articles composing the reward as they may have to deliver, witnessed by two or more of the garrison. One of these to be transmitted to you to enable you to settle for the expenditure of the money. You will also be pleased to re[undecipherable] receipts for the same purpose from the officers with whom you deposit the money, who will in turn, should it or any of it remain unexpended when relieved, take a similar receipt from the receiving officer to whom it is to be turned over. Ack[nowledge] by duplicate receipts the reception of this money.
