Carlisle October 28^th 1797 I Rec^d your letter of the 17^th Ins^t. And also the sum of four hundred and Seventy Nine Dollars [undecipherable] transmitted me by Samuel Lewis, Clark of the War office, for my pay, and the pay, of the recruits up to the 31^st of Sep^t. Inclusive— And as Robert Young and John Smiths pay, was not included in the Above sum I have agreeable to your direction, added them to the Rec^pt. Roll— And paid them accordingly— As you will find by the enclosed Vouchers— You Expressed in your letter of a doubt concerning my Muster rolls. As they were not attested to before a Magistrate— It give me pleasure that it was in my power to have the recruits Mustered by Major Freeman — Who not only Mustered the detachment but calculated Examined And Compared the Pay rolls, with the Muster Rolls— Which I hope will be Satisfactory— And also correspond with the rolls Exhibited— for give me leave to assure you that I never Certified any thing, that I did not believe to be true— I also find by your letter that my drawing Rations as the commanding officer of a Separate Post, is not admissable I have therefore enclosed to your office a Recept for my Subsistance for the Month of Aug^t. I having drawn for the Month of July Double the Quantity, entitled to— Enclosed you have my recruiting Accompt and Vouchers— by which you will find that I have been Obliged to appropriate my own pay for the payment of Young & Smith, And also that I have Expended all the Money in my hands for the recruiting Service— I would therefore be glad to receive a supply as soon as possible— I have the Honour to be with every Sentiment of Esteem for you friend & Very Humble Ser^t.
