W^m Simmons Acct The Secretary of War Accountants Office near Downingstown October 25^th 1797 Sir The law of Congress of the 3 March 1797 provides an inspector, and authorizes the Brigadier to choose him from the Captains & Subalterns in the line — I find Major Cushing has been appointed to this Office and claims the allowance stipulated in the aforementioned act — I have therefore to request you will inform me, what allowance, or emoluments, he is to receive as inspector that I may communicate the same to the Paymaster General immediately as his payments will be suspended, untill he hears from me on the subject.
