Sir
On taking up your account for mounting artillery I find in that of Daniel De Saussure a sum of Five hundred dollars credited said to be received for a bill on Josiah Smith Esqr as he has no account on the books of this Office, I presumed he may have received it from the Treasury Department but on application there I find he has not, and therefore remain at a loss who to credit with the account — I must accordingly be furnished with the necessary information relative to that sum before I can direct the examination to be made. I am &c.
