George Gale Esq^r Hurck de grace— Mary— Sir Herewith I take the liberty to enclose sundry letters for the different paymasters of the Maryland militia called out to suppress an insurrection in the western counties of Pennsylvania in the year 1794, all tending to the same object, that is, "to account for the monies paid them for the pay of the said militia, by producing, the necessary vouchers for the sums paid, or by refunding any balance that may remain unappropriated in their hands without delay, to the Treasurer of the United States." From the general tenor of these letters you will readily see the necessity of their using all possible dispatch in this instance, and if you can any way assist them in expediting the business I shall consider myself obliged to you and to leave you as much as possible master of the business, I leave the letters open for your perusal & government— you will please to seal & forward them with all possible expedition— and as I am unacquainted with the place of residence of the gentlemen in question I have to request the favor of you to add it to the superscription on the letters respectively, as also opposite to their names on the enclosed list after which you will be so obliging as to return me the said list to serve as a guide in case it may be necessary to address any of them hereafter— There is also a letter from me to yourself enclosed, similar to the others, by which you will observe that you stand charged on the abstract rendered by the Paymaster General as monies paid you for the same object, to this letter permit me to repeat my request of your speedy attention.
