Jersey Militia October 17^th 1797 Sir On examination of Presley Nevills accounts as Paymaster General to the Militia called out to suppress an insurrection in the western counties of Pennsylvania in the year 1794, you stand charged with money received from James Mott, Treasurer of the State of New Jersey, for the Pay of the following companies of Jersey Militia, to wit, Capt John Tufts Company } Capt Enos Johnson's do, } belonging to the 1 Reg^t of Infantry Capt Jacob Hammets do } Capt Eli Elmers —— " } Capt Israel Canfields " } do—— do Artillery employed on that expedition; and as no vouchers have hitherto been transmitted to this to exonerate you from those charges, I have to request your immediate attention to rendering such as you possess or can obtain in a short time properly stated; and in case of deficiency to refund the balance unaccounted for in your hands to the Treasurer of the United States. I am under the necessity of being the more urgent in requesting your attention to this object, in consequence of a resolution of Congress of the 3^d March last, directing me to furnish an abstract, by the first week in January next of the names of all the receivers of public monies unaccounted for. Col^t Nevill, the P.M.G. has been furnished with directions to attend to the final settlement of all the accounts relative to that expedition & is to attend on the 15^th November next for that purpose: before which time I flatter myself your accounts and vouchers will be all regularly furnished and examined in this Office, and the amount paid by you passed to its proper account on the aforementioned abstract to be furnished to Congress.
