M^r John James Accountants Office late Cap^t in the Virg^a Militia — October 17^th 1797 Sir Fauquier County. In an abstract of monies advanced by Presley N— will Paymaster General to the Militia called out to suppress an insurrection in the western counties of Pennsylvania in the year 1794 you stand charged with money received by you from him pursuant to a warrant in your favor being for pay of a company of Virginia Militia commanded by you, employed in said expedition, and as no vouchers have hitherto been [strikethrough: transmitted] to this Office to exonerate you from said advance I have to request your immediate attention in rendering such as you actually possess or can speedily procure, properly [undecipherable] and case of a deficiency to refund the balance remaining in your hands unaccounted for to the Treasurer of the United States. I am under the necessity to be the more urgent in requesting your immediate attention to this object in consequence of a resolution of Congress of the 3^d March last directing me to furnish a list of the receivers of all public monies unaccounted for by the first week in January next. Col. Nevill the P.H.G. has been furnished with directions to attend to the final settlement of all the accounts relative to that expedition and is to attend for that purpose on the 15^th November next before which time I hope your account & vouchers will be regularly furnished and examined in this Office, and the amount paid by you passed to its proper account in the aforementioned abstract to be laid before Congress.
