William Dayton Esquire Accountants Office late P.M. to the N.J. Militia October 17^th 1797 Sir In an abstract of monies advanced by Presley Nevill Paymaster General to the militia called out to suppress an insurrection in the western counties of Pennsylvania in the year 1794, you stand charged with different sums of money paid to you for the pay of the New Jersey Militia employed in said expedition and as no vouchers have been hitherto transmitted to this Office to exonerate you from those charges, I have to request your attention in transmitting such as you actually possess or can shortly obtain, properly stated, and in case of any deficiency, to refund the balance unaccounted for in your hands to the Treasurer of the United States. I am under the necessity to be the more urgent in requesting your immediate attention to this object in consequence of a resolution of Congress of the 3^d of March last, wherein I am directed to furnish an abstract by the first week in January next of the names of the receivers of public monies unaccounted for. In rendering your accounts you will please to be particular in stating an account current charging the mon[undecipherable] received and crediting the expenditures, agreeably to the Pay Ro[undecipherable] and accounts you were furnished with — also filing the rece[undecipherable] with the accounts with corresponding numbers which are to accompany the account current — A list of the sums remaining unpaid accounting for any balance remaining in your hands unappropriated is also to be furnished. Your particular attention to these several objects is [strikethrough: particularly] requested as Col Nevill the P.M.G. has been furnished with directions to attend the final settlement of all the accounts relative to that expedition & is to attend for that purpose on the 15^th of November next, before which time I flatter myself your accounts and vouchers will be all be regularly furnished and examined in this Office and the amount paid by you passed to its proper account on the aforementioned abstract to be furnished to Congress.
