S^ir On the 25 July 1794 Captain Pike executed a relinquishment of twenty dollars per month of his pay from and after the first of October 1794. to be received at your office, and I obligated myself to Stop the payment here; In november 1795, Captain Pike was put to Command at Macpas, and then represented to me that all his debts were paid in the atlantied States, and wished to receive his whole pay here, upon which, I desired him to with draw his Relinquishment and my Obligation from your Office, as a necessary Step towards obtaining his whole pay here. I have continued notwithstanding to make the Stoppage until the 31 day of October 1796. — but in Consequence of his letter to me of the 24.^th of October 1796 of which the following is an extract. ("I am not a little "Surprised at the detention of your certificate or Obligation for the relinquishment of my pay, for which "I have wrote to the accountant in the most "pressing manner, Stating the necessity of receiving "my Stipend in this country, however I shall not "unless compelled by necessity, continue to importune "him. — and that in the meantime should you "have an interview with the accountant, you will "be able to obtain your Certificate".) I have just him his pay in full by Lieu^t Sterrett, from the 1 November 1796 to the 31 October 1797. and therefore requests that you will be pleased to enclose to me by the next post, the abovementioned Certificate which I have given relative to the Said Stoppage, and that in any event you may recollect the circumstances of his being paid in full for the period before mentioned.
