October 4^th 1797 The Committee of Congress late in Session at German town having given Major James Grant a discharge, & certificate to that effect, I deemed it proper that his expences should be paid on his return to the State of Tennessee, as they were paid by me to this place. & Grant, been been [strikethrough: been] Instructed not being able to pay his own expences has Obliges me to request, that you may advance One Hundred Dollars, for the purpose of defraying his expences to Knoxville in the State of Tennessee & his Town bill at German town while attending the Committee.
