James Bruff ~ D.W. accountants Office Comm.^g at Fort Niagara October 3.^d 1797 Sir I wrote you on the 28.^th July last, since then I hav received your letter of the 28^th same Month, and 19.^th August accompanied with a Muster and Pay Roll for June & July and a receipt roll for January, February, March, April and May 1797 of Troops stationed at Fort Niagara under your command which will undergo the necessary examination and if found free of error the amount passed to your Credit — All the men inlisted by Captain Hannah have rec[eived] their full bounty of Eight Dollars each, & Thomas Parker was inlisted by him he must have received his also The Soldiers who may reinlist at your Garrison are intitled to receive the whole of their bounty, they being considered as having joined their Regiments.— From your muster and Pay Rolls for July 1797 - amounting to D^rs 493.1 I have deducted from the pay of W.^m Butler artificer his time expiring on the 10^th July and made up by to the 31 dec the sum of 6.1 and added to the Pay of Lieutenants John McClellan & Harvey 48[undecipherable] [undecipherable] Voucher four dollars each, the pay of Lieut being increased to thirty dollars p^r mo after 30 June last. Four hundred ninety five dollars and two Cents D^rs 495. which by mistake includes the sum of Thirty dollars for the pay Lieutenant Vischer that as well as his pay for the month of Aug^t having at his particular desire been sent to Albany, you will yourself accordingly in forming the receipt Roll. The amount will receive as usual from Samuel Lewis Clark in War Office whom you will please give the customary receipts.— The receipts for money paid for pursuing deserters if you mention to have sent, have never come to hand, consequently can say nothing about the propriety of the charges.— By this conveyance pursuant to your request you will receive a packet containing Muster, pay and receipt Rolls I wish you would write as early as possible after making the payments to the Troops for their pay for July, render an Abstract stating the balance remaining in your hands that means may to taken for its disposal.
