Near Downingtown 30 Sep^t 1797 Sir Mr Rogers & Mr Cary have attended the committee of Congress, the chairman of which has informed me, that they have [undecipherable] an apparently unre[undecipherable] disclosure of all the circumstances within their kno[undecipherable] relative to the business with which [undecipherable] is charged. They have been advanced [undecipherable] the office one hundred dollars, and [undecipherable] at this place one hundred dollars in add[undecipherable]. The latter advance has become necessary to enable Cary to purchase a horse, [undecipherable] that he had from Cap^t Lewis [undecipherable] [undecipherable] to me as almost blind and [undecipherable] down as [undecipherable] unable at present for service. He is left with my [undecipherable] with a farman. Mr Rogers & Mr Cary will [undecipherable] due vouchers for their expenses in all cases [strikethrough: prosecued] where they can be obtain[ed] and where they cannot you will be guided by their testimony or the reasonable[undecipherable] of the charges. Mr Rogers informs me that one of his horses employed by the party of Indian [undecipherable] to [undecipherable] to Philadelphia was lost or stolen, and demands to be [undecipherable] his value.
