[undecipherable] Near Downingstown 30 Sep^t 1797. Sir. M^r. Rogers & M^r. Lamy have attended the committee of Congress, the chairman of which has informed me, that they have made an apparently unreserved disclosure of all the circumstances within their knowledge relative to the business with which [he] is charged. They have been advanced [at] the office one hundred dollars, and M^r. Lamy at this place one hundred dollars in addit[ion]. The latter advance has become necessary to enable Lamy to purchase a horse, [as that] which he had from Cap^t. Lewes being presented to me as almost blind and [so] down as [undecipherable] at present for service. He is left with my [undecipherable] with a farmer. M^r. Rogers & M^r. Lamy will produce vouchers for their expenses in all cases [strikethrough: undecipherable] where they can be obtained and where they cannot you will be guided by their testimony or the reasonableness of the charges. M^r. Rogers informs me that one of his horses employed by the party of Indians that he escorted to Philadelphia was lost or stolen, and demands to be paid his value. You will investigate the circumstances, and if he can produce satisfactory [proof?] evidence of the loss and value of the horse make him a reasonable compensation.
