Detroit 20 September 1797 Sir I enclose to you the account Current and Vouchers of Lieu.^t James Sterret PM.^r art.^s & Eng.^s for payments Made by him to the said Corps of Art.^s & Engineers, from 1 January 1795, to 31 August 1797 also a list of the absentees of the said Corps, unpaid; And a copy of my receipt to him for the said papers. I am Sir your Most Ob.^a Serv.^t C [undecipherable] M.^r [undecipherable] Esq.^r Accountant [Enclosure] Detroit 20 September 1797 Received of Lieu.^t James Sterret Pay master to the 1.^st Battalion of Artillerists and Engineers, six parcels of receipts denominated and marked A. B. C. D. E and F; being for payments made by the said Lieu.^t Sterret, to the said first battalion, and other detachments of the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers; of pay and forage from the 1.^st of October 1795 to the 1.^st day of September 1797 and of subsistence from the 1.^st January 1795 to 31 May 1797. Also an account Current for Twenty eight thousand eight hundred and fifty six 67/100 dollars; in which a balance of Nine [undecipherable]/100 dollars, is stated to be due from the United States to the said Lieu.^t Sterret Also a list of the balances stated by him to be due to certain absentees of the said Corps of Artillerists and Engineers, on the 26^th of September 1797; which papers I shall forthwith transmit to the Accountant of the department of War, agreeably to my instructions.
