Concerns about Blount's Influence in Tennessee
Document 1797Wolcott expresses concern about the continued influence of William Blount in Tennessee and how it could provoke a potential Indian crisis. It is important to disconnect the Georgia speculations from Blount's project or else a war with the Indians may result. He has been ill but reports that the sickness decreases in Philadelphia but increases in Balitmore.
Cray’s Gardens Septr. 15 1797 Dear Sir I have the permission of W Steele to transmit to you the enclosed Letters: - they contain information which may be of use - Wm Polk the writer is the present supervisor of North Carolina and may be relied on - it seems that Wm Blount’s influence in Tennessee is not a good omen - but we must make the best of it. It is important to disconnect the Georgia Speculations & interest from Blount’s project if possible - else a war with the Indians may yet be incited. I hope you and your family are well. I have been troubled with a Jacobinical affection in my bowels, but I think I have subdued it. The sickness diminishes in Phil’a but is said to increase in Baltimore. May God bless you Oliv Wolcott James McHenry Esq. Private I have perused your draft of a letter with a conviction that if it is sent, the object of obtaining Col. Orrs assistance will be defeated. - There exists a concealed spirit of rivalship and want of accommodation - it will not do to notice or complain of it but the fact should be known. I do not know that Col Orr will like the proposed service, or would undertake it – if a letter to him and another to Mr. Ammes were to be enclosed to Capt Woodsworth he could manage the matter - and I am willing that he should be instructed not to engage Col. Orr if on enquiry the factory would be injured - this cannot however happen - I am yours with respt. Oliv Wolcott May 28 - James McHenry
