I received your letter of the 3 Inst. enclos[ing a] Pay Roll for August 1797 of the attachment employe[d at] West Point in the service of the Ordnance Department amounting to Twenty two dollars & 72/100 which sum yo[u will] receive as usual from Nicholas Fish Esqr Supervisor of New York on giving him duplicate receipts holding yourself accountable for the same, the amount of the Receipt Roll of the same detachment for June received in the above mentioned letter will be passed to your credit on the Books of this Office being nineteen dollars. —
You will at the same time receive from Mr Fish a further sum of Two hundred dollars for which you will please to grant the necessary receipts holding yourself accountable, being so much in advance for the use of the Ordnance Department out of which you will please to discharge Thomas Hughes's account herein inclosed agreeably to my order thereon, the residue you will keep in your hands to be applied for the like purposes as occasions may require. —
With respect to the payments made by you to Col: Rochefontaine for the hire of the Public Teams I can by no means admit them to your credit in the present state of things, it may not however be improper to inform you that the Secretary of War informed me that as soon as a sufficient number of Officers of other Corps can be assembled he will order a court of enquiry to investigate the conduct of Col Rochefontaine.
