Portland Sept. 18^th 1797 Sir, Having carefully examined the Account Currents transmitted me on the 18^th ult. & compared it with the duplicates of the Receipt Rolls & Recruiting Accounts now in my possession, I beg leave to suggest two errors. In the sum remitted for pay of myself & recruits for January & February 1795 there appears to be an omission of sixty five Cents. The sum remitted was four hundred six Dollars [underline: & sixty five Cents]. I am credited by premiums for [underline: ten] recruits, when I had returned [underline: eleven]. This will appear by the inspection of the two Recruiting Accounts stated in the Account Currents as N^o 1 & 2 — & comprising the space of time from April 5^th 1795 to March 26^th 1796. If these two errors are corrected the balance due the United States is eight Dollars & eighty seven Cents. I take liberty to return the Account Currents that you may cause it to be compared with the preceeding remarks. As soon as it shall be again sent to me the balance shall be transmitted to the Treasurer. Or if agreeable you may deduct it from my pay.
