Sir
Your letters of the 21 & 25th ult. accompanies by two addressed to Col° Gayard and one to Governor St.Clair &one to the Governor of Kentucky all of which shall be duly forwarded
I am much obliged by the trouble you have taken in handing the account to Col°. Pickering and much more by your application to him & the Secretary of War in support of my claim of compensation for services in ordnance and clothing departments and I have now agreeable to your direction copied and transmitted my account as stated by Col. Pickering up to the 9th December 1794 and I have also transmitted you a copy of Col°. Pickerings letter to the Secretary of War expressing that thereby and as that letter specifies the Secretary of States Opinion very explicitly. I am in hopes the Secretary of War on a second perusal will be inclined to decide in favor of my claim as thereby stated. I have not transmitted my account for services as Deputy Commissary of Provisions as the Commissary General has proposed taking up that account himself. I shall therefore proceed to a continuation of the account acquaint Major [undecipherable] with it least it should interfere with arrangements that he may have made. You will see the amount of the account now transmitted to be 1512 dollars payable to you by an order which you will please to send to the proper Officer
Enclosed herewith you will find a general Return of Stores made up for this Post to the 1st of July 1797 This return has been emitted by an actual Survey of all the Stores on hand, by this Survey I have discovered a deficiency in some articles and a considerable surplus in others, the whole of which I am not yet able to account for, but a principal part of it may very justly be attributed to a number of Packages received of the Militia Army agreeable to there marks but found on being opened to contain very different articles
James Hamiltons three [undecipherable: waggons?] arrived yesterday and being [undecipherable] unable to Return without Money I was under a necessity of advancing to his driver David Buchanan 75 dollars for which sum you see his acknowledgment on the back of my Receipt for his loading I Hamilton desires it to be forwarded to him when convenient to you, will you therefore be pleased to hand it to Hamilton and on settlement with him place 75 dollars to my credit. The two Howitzers and two of the Nine pounders have arrived and are on board the boats, the other is not yet come to hand
Copies of the receipts given the Contractor shall be transmitted by next post.
P.S. I have this day drawn on you in favor of John [undecipherable] for 800 dollars at 8 days sight, which be pleased to pay and charge to the D.M.Gen — N.B. the return is accompanied by abstracts of receipts & pieces by vouchers of issues of Stores
