Sir I received your letter of the 14^th Instant enclosing the pay Roll of the Detachment under your command for May and June 1797 from which the pay of Daniel Holland one Do [strikethrough: llar] and that of Jeremiah Daniels four Dollar [strikethrough: s] the former being [strikethrough: forfeited] by law in consequence of his Desertion, and the latter to be settled at this Office in consequence of his death, has been deducted, which leaves an amount of Seven hundred & Sixteen dollars & fifty four Cents which you will receive in the usual manner from Daniel Stevens Esq^r Supervisor Charleston, on giving him the necessary receipt holding yourself accountable. In future it will be most proper that you transmit your Muster and Pay Rolls directly to this Office where the Secretary of War can always have reference to them when he wants it. — I am &c.
