I enclose to you (open for your inspe[undecipherable] the account of Major Rivardis, therein appears a balan[undecipherable] against him to amount of Eight hundred fifty two 83/100 [undecipherable] four hundred dollars of which ought to have been [undecipherable] to his debit at the time he settled his account as Tem[undecipherable] Engineer but was omitted in consequence of having [undecipherable] the said sum to Mr Lindsay at Norfolk who was held [undecipherable] -countable for the productions of Major Revardis rec[undecipherable]
As 'tis a desirable object to settle & clos[undecipherable] many accounts as possible especially such as have b[undecipherable] standing some years, I request you will without d[undecipherable] plea[undecipherable] to transmit the account and letter to Major Rivar[undecipherable] enforce a settlement thereof by such means as may [undecipherable] to you the most likely to effect that purpose.

You will receive herewith a copy of your account current wherein there appears a balance due the United States of Eight hundred fifty two 83/100 Dollars, by that statement you will perceive that four hundred Dollars was transmitted to Wm Lindsay at Norfolk for your Compensation & personal expences as Temporary Engineer, which sum was omitted to be brought to your debit at the settlement of your account the remainder was advanced on account of your Pay as Major and for which you have not sent forward any account and Vouchers.
By a Resolve of the [strikethrough: of the] House of Representatives of the 3d March 1797 I am required to lay before them within the first week in January next an abstract of the receivers of all public monies from the 1st January 1791 to 1st January 1797.
In order to prevent your name from appearing as a delinquent, I would recommend to you, an immediate settlement of your account either with Caleb Swan Esqr PayMaster General, or by transmitting it to this Office accompanied with
