Fort Washington Aug. 13^th 1795 [8:17] Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the [undecipherable] — Since my last report on the subject of suspicious persons passing through this country I have until now met with nothing worthy of communicating. A few days ago a M^r [undecipherable] de Lisa a merchant out of New Orleans and in company with a M^r Kinozea [undecipherable] who is charged with dispatches from the Department of State to our Commissioner M^r Elliot. [The latter?] informed me that [he?] had come with him from Phila- & was to accompany him to the Falls of Ohio & from thence he intended to go to Post Vincennes where he has a Store. De Lisa was here but one night & I believe had no communication with the inhabitants. Hamilton the person mentioned in my last Report [undecipherable] has never been heard of & follows the occupation of a dentist. I do not find that he has of late done any thing to confirm the suspicions I had at first formed of him — he is a man of desperate fortune & I imagine it would not be difficult to employ him in any villainous scheme — should I find [him to?] be [able to?] better his [undecipherable] [undecipherable] I [undecipherable] on the subject of suspicious [undecipherable] countries. I proceed [then?] — I speak [of?] the [importance?] of mentioning to you [undecipherable] connected — relating to M^r David Jones late Chaplain to the Army — this man I know to be [undecipherable] just [undecipherable] from the [undecipherable] — would be productive. He has lately made a tour through Kentucky & [passed?] here a few days ago. I endeavoured to discover from him the motive of his journey, but all that I could get from him was that he descended the Ohio for the purpose of taking up with him — a mare which he had bought when he was last in this country — it appeared to me strange that a man of his years should have taken [such?] a journey in bad health for [such?] an object. This together with my knowledge of the man — his violent attachment to the French Government, [of?] dislike to our own, together with a declaration which he makes to me [undecipherable] his [undecipherable] of his being engaged in some agency prejudicial to the interest of the United States. The declaration [undecipherable] to was, [that?] if the French established [undecipherable] of the [undecipherable] — being had for the confederate [undecipherable] with [undecipherable] bound — in the family of the late Major General Wayne, & still being on good terms with [them?] for the [undecipherable] (she was born here) — I am extremely sorry to be the means of exciting the suspicions of Government and to [denounce?] him when I have [undecipherable] of his guilt — but the times are such as to oblige everyone of our country to keep a [strict?] look out & if possible discover & produce to the detection of the world traitors, who acting under [foreign?] influence are [plotting?] the destruction to the interests of their country. There has a man [arrived?] here [undecipherable] — that [undecipherable] from Fort [undecipherable] the [undecipherable] — [that?] [Capt?] [undecipherable] after [having?] been [undecipherable] [Dec?] Battery kept [undecipherable] — The 11^th July — Capt [undecipherable] had [undecipherable] with the Commander of [undecipherable] Headed & had informed him that he is expected to [undecipherable] the [undecipherable] to [watch?], the [undecipherable] that he is [undecipherable] his post — he feared that [undecipherable] will [undecipherable] and hinted that he had better [stay?] where he was — They (the [undecipherable]) have [undecipherable] and [undecipherable] finding a [undecipherable] [undecipherable] on the [undecipherable] [undecipherable] of the [undecipherable] about [undecipherable] miles about [undecipherable] and [undecipherable] of Ohio. I give you this information Sir, because I encourage you and depend of hearing the earliest accounts — of the [undecipherable] out of Capt.
