William Morris rec^d 8^th Aug^t 1797 ans. same day] [William Simmons Esq^re William D^pt of War accp^ts Philadelphia aug. 4] Governor Mo[rris] Aug^t 4 1797 Sir Having understood that Cap^t Littlefield upon his return from Oswego presented an acc^t of expences he incurred to and from that place that were allowed. I request the favor to be informed whether it was the case, if they were allowed the rest of the officers on that command [strikethrough: were] equally entitled to theirs. We did not take receipts as might have been proper, but as we clubbed our expences all the way on the marches they consequently must the each amount to the same Further the subalterns may be said to have been at greater expence, for in consequence of their not receiving arrears of pay [underline: they] were obliged to sir to raise cash to bear unavoidable expences, and received for their drafts half cash, and half goods which they had little or no occasion for — I suppose our reasonable expences to have averaged about a dollar a day but they can be best ascertained by Cap^t Littlefield's account.
