West Point, August 2^d 1797 Sir, I have received your letter of the 24^th instant; and Lieutenant Ross has, in consequence, gone to New York to bring thence the pay for July. I inclose you for inspection the several accounts of Daniel Harris, Doctor Steel, and Robert Finlay & William Cornwall. Finlay and Cornwall have Sccured no deserters. I am in hopes, that the amount of their expenditures will convince you of the propriety of giving me [underline: explicit] directions; and that you will relieve me from an awkward situation, in which I have not known how to act, and do my duty.
