Capt^t Michael Halteisen Accountants Off[ice] Fort Johnson — S.Carolina July 22^d 1797 Sir I received your letter of the 1^st Inst enc[losing] the receipt roll for march & april of yourself & Com[pany] the amount of which will be passed to your Credit [on] the Books of this Office being Six hundred forty fiv[e] 81 Cents. — When you transmit a Pay Roll for May & [June] conformably to the Muster Rolls for that period now r[eceived] the amount will be remitted you thro' the usual ch[annel] I am of opinion you have an undo[ubted] right to withhold Henry Philips's balance of pay un[til he] will receipt for the full amount, unless there be som[e reason] unknown to me for his objecting to have the advance you made him deducted, of which you can best judges.
