Document 1797Dr. Wells takes the liberty of offering himself for the position of surgeon or surgeon's mate. Since he is unknown, he has asked some of his medical mentors to write to McHenry on his behalf. He has studied medicine for four years and attended a course of lectures at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Honble James McHenry Esq War Office Philada Baltimore 11th July 1797 Sirs I have taken the Liberty of offering myself to you for an appointment as Surgeon or Surgeon’s Mate, being unknown to you I have thought it most adviseable that some of the Medical gentlemen should also Write to you - I have Read Medicine for 4-years and have attended one course of lectures at the University of Pennsylvania, if Sirs you should think the Recommendations that you will Receive when you Receive this are Sufficient, with Due Respect [undecipherable] to the frigate Constellation Humbe StHenry Wells
