War Office [undecipherable] July, 1797 Sir, I have been honored with your letter of the 6. of June Ultimo, and have the pleasure to assure you that the President has the most perfect reliance upon your good intentions to co operate in preserving peace with the Indians and maintaining the laws of the United States. On the other hand I hope the measures which are in train for the more effectual protection of the South western frontier will particularly evidence the interest which is felt for the security of those Citizens over whom you have been called to preside. I enclose you several official papers which will serve to show you the critical situation in which we stand with regard to certain foreign powers, and the inimical practice of some of our own Citizens, and how important it is that all good men should unite their endeavours to avert the Storm which would seem to be gathering round our common Country, and to detect those concealed enemies whose projects would overturn its government or deluge a whole people in blood. The papers alluded to will bring particularly to your view the criminality of an old acquaintance who has rendered himself unworthy of the seat he held in the Senate of the United States from which he has been recently expelled. Besides this punishment the House of Representatives have impeached him and appointed a committee of their Body to act in this cause to prepare the articles of impeachment and to send for persons, papers, and records for the further elucidation of his intentions — This Committee having requested of me an Officer to execute their orders in Tenasee I have permitted Captain [undecipherable] to receive them and request that you will aid him with your advice in the execution. — I have the honour to be, with great Respect Your Excellency's obed servant.
