Articles Sent to Le Boeuf Lost on Sunken Ship
Document 1797Whiskey on hand to be returned. Copy of invoice of sundry articles sent to Le Boeuf sent to Hodgdon. Articles were on board a ship traveling up the Allegheny River which sunk, all articles lost.
Pittsburg 7th July 1797 Sir, I have received your letter of the 30th ulto. respecting the Whiskey which shall be retained on hand as you have directed. I have this day transmitted to Mr Samuel Hodgon a Copy of an Invoice of Sundry articles shipped for Le Boeuf on the 27th ulto on board a boat which in ascending the Alleghany, about 60 miles advanced from this place sunk and part of her Cargo lost and all of it wet and much injured. Every possible pains have been taken to recover and preserve the public property, but I am apprehensive that even a part of the Articles recovered will be useless.
