West Point July 1. 1797. Sir, Your letter of the 21 ultimo I have received, and have received from Col. Fish the April & May pay for the ordnance detachment. Receipt rolls from the said detachment for the said pay I now enclose you. I would be glad to know who is to account to me for the money I paid Col. R. Lafontaine for the work of the public's team. When I last spoke to him on the subject, he told me neither the Treasury nor War Department had written to him for an explanation of his conduct, and that the Treasury Department must account to me for the money, and added, if either of said Departments were to write to him on the subject, he would explain the propriety of his conduct.
