N^o 11 30 June 1797 — Jacob Sheafe —] [M^r Josiah Fox Naval Constructor Philadelphia] M^r Josiah Fox Portsmouth June 30^th 1797 Dear Sir I duly rec^d y^r fav^r of the 23^d of April & was sorry to find the Articles of Sail Cloth & Cordage for the Algerine Frigate were purchased in Phila & think the extra freight &c must run them much higher than if purchased in Portm^o as you were kind enough long before to mention my having these articles for Sale — I think their not taking them from this quarter must be owing to some of our Antifederal friends — I observed what you mention respecting Ship building & thought the price to Col^o Hacket &c $45 p^r Ton for the Algerine Frigate was great; our W.O Timber is from $6 to $9 p^r Ton the planks are oblige to saw by hand which makes our turn out very high therefore I cannot give you much Encouragement on that score — I have been inform'd that M^r Thompson has written for discretionary leave to take Timber &c from our Yard just as he might see fitt & he have leave you can judge how things are going — Col^o Hacket Launched the Algerine Frigate yesterday she run of pretty well & was Stiff & looks very handsome she is halled to Langdons Island Wharf I am inform'd Thompson & Hacket had some considerable Altercation at Launching Thompson tried to backen the Business & wanted Hacket to keep her on 10 or 12 days longer; but Hacket having his work pretty well Completed insisted on Launching her — Col^o Hacket sent over for me to go to Launching & gave me this information I did not interfere in the matter — I have been oblige to supply the Boston Frigate with a great number of her principal Knees & Beams & a considerable Quantity of thick Oaks Plank & W.O Timber — two large Schooner loads have lately gone round Indeed I know not what they could have done had it not been for our Yard — I am inform'd Cap^t Newman of Newbyport is to Command the Algerine Frigate he was a Master & a Prisoner in Algiers some time & I believe has been used to Arm'd Vessels ever since 1776 — I wish a line from you on receipt of this or as soon as convenient & should any thing new turn up please to advise me — With Esteem & Respect I am Your Ob^dt Serv^t Jacob Sheafe [M^r Quincy has been oblige to attend the yard every day Except Sundays — I hope his Salary will be Enlarged — $400 is but a poor Maintainance]
