James McHenry Esq^re / Sec^y of War / Philadelphia] [Rec'd 18 July 1797] Canandaigua June 29, 1797 Sir I have this moment rec'd yours of the 8^th inst and have but a moment to reply to it. I met [undecipherable] at Albany as I was going on he returning from Philadelphia. I have not seen him since — he very manly spoke freely to me, and assured me, that it was not [that?] [undecipherable] said him, [undecipherable] was, when he visited [undecipherable], and that it was wrong to observe that our Ind[ian] services were [undecipherable] I have much more attention was paid to them, [which] was a bad policy, as it would naturally tend to prompt them to [undecipherable] us. He [undecipherable] did not appear to show any [spirit?] or give [undecipherable]. Brant as well as [I] have had reports among the [undecipherable] that they have [shown?] [sly?] been [undecipherable] [where?] the [two?] [undecipherable] had [laid?] aside their friendship towards the [Americans?] which gave me unspeakable trouble to [undecipherable] them. If Brant had [undecipherable] had any thing to communicate, I believe he would have told it to me as he often rec'd his matters and [had?] other [undecipherable] information. He might have had some thing at the time of [undecipherable] and [undecipherable] — obtained something since — an abstract of his 16^th I have just read and enclosed which I would not have submitted to you. I am so well acquainted with the [undecipherable] I believe I can manage this [one?] the [undecipherable] prudence & make it satisfactory. Perhaps some of the money may be necessary to be paid over to him, I have written to himself late and shall hear from him soon. I know there is a letter from him to one now at Buffaloe Creek which will probably soon come to hand & shall soon be able to give you further information.
