[Duplicate] Mark Uncanny — June 28. 1797 Sir Your letters of the 19^th & 26^th Ult. have come to Hand & shall be duly attended so soon as I reach Detroit. — W. Swan from what cause I know not, declined my Order to repair to that Washington, & Ensign Chew[?]en the Paymaster of the 4^th Regiment was obliged to attend his Corps, as the Season was so far Spent, as to forbid the delay necessary to the distribution of the Pay to the privates. — Under the order of the Secretary of War he may promptly & conveniently wait on you from Knoxville — his Accounts had had I understood been adjusted with M^r Swan, up to the Beginning of the present Year. — The menacing aspect of things in this quarter, internal as well as external & the enfeebled State of our Battalions, has induced me to make an appropriation to the recruiting Service, of a few hundred Dollars, the residue of the thirty Thousands, which I brought out with me, has been expended upon the 4^th Reg^t, the artillery, Dragoons, & the Detachment to the Mississippi; the necessary vouchers have been taken & will be deposited with M^r Swan. — These Troops have been paid up to the first of April, May, & the present month, a particular statement shall be transmitted to you from Detroit — The Corps in this quarter are far from being complete, the time of our best best men are daily expiring, & we lose them for want of recruiting money — The Secretary is apprized of these facts, yet I have not a line from him since the 14^th April; — my solicitude for the public Service, must be my apology for requesting you to [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] subject — Respectfully I am Sir Your most Ob^t Serv^t James Wilkinson William Simmonds Esq^t Accountant of the War Department.
