James Bruff Accountants Off[ice] commanding at June 25^th 1797 Niagara Sir I have to inform you that by this c[on]veyance you will receive from Samuel Lewis Clk. the War Office the following sums of money, for the [pur]poses hereinafter expressed — viz. D^r 3295⅔ for the Pay of yourself, and Detachment, and the forage due the Officers attached the[re] for the months of January, February, Ma[rch] and April 1797. " 1654 — Amount of an Estimate of two months pay [and fo]rage of your Detachment so as to comple[te] their pay to the 1^st July next " 500 — for the recruiting service D^r 5452⅔ making in the whole, Five thousand, four [hun]dred & fifty two dollars & three cents for which sums you will forward seperately your receipts, by different a[d]vances agreeably to said Lewis's letters The first s[um] for the [pay] of your Detachment to the 1^st May is ascertain'd from Muster & Pay Rolls in this Office, and of which you [have] enclosed an account of differences after examination here, to which you are requested to attend in forming your receipt Rolls. The second sum was formed on estimates calculated according to the Pay & muster Rolls for the former period, you will accordingly make out Pay. and Muster Rolls, and after accurately examining them Pay the Troops on receipt Rolls for those mo[nths] all of which you will by the first safe opportu[nity] forward to this Office. The sum for Recruiting is forwarded on a representation from you on the subject of recruiting, the mode of application will be pointed out by Recruiting Instructions you will receive from the Secretary of War— all of which will be forwarded to you by a confidential person under direction of S. Chapin In answer to your letter of the 10^th Ultimo: I have to observe that by the enclosed Copy of an Account Current stated in this Office from Vouchers & accounts received from you. You will see the state of your account on the Books of this Office, and the Vouchers which have been received from you & entered. The Pay due to Samuel Gregory cannot be [remainder cut off]
