Purchase of a Horse for Fort Niagara
Document 1797At Captain Bruff's direction, McClellan purchased a horse for the use of the garrison at Fort Niagara. He has drawn on McHenry in favor of Clinch & Van Volgin the sum of $112.50 to be paid by the Supervisor of the District of New York.
The Honble The Secretary of War Philadelphia [upside down] Lieut. McClellan 19 June 1797 Advises of a [undecipherable] Rec’d 1st July Fort Niagara 19 June 1797 Sir Some days since I purchased a Horse for the use of this Garrison by the direction of Captain Bruff Commanding. I have (in conformity to your instructions of last fall to Captain Bruff) drawn on you in favor of Messrs Clinch & Van Volgin for 112 Dols 50 Cents at 10 Days sight paye in New York. I have informed the Gentlemen in whose favor the draft is, to call on the Supervisor of the district of New York, whom you may probably direct to honor it.
