Soldiers Charged with Desertion
Document 1797The reason why Pvts. John Sullivan, Hutchinson, and Kershey were mustered without remark was that they had been charged with desertion and sent to Fort Mifflin for trial. When they returned to Fort McHenry, one said he was to be discharged and the other two claimed that they had been pardoned. Even if these claims are true, they should not have been on the payroll since they did not return until the end of the month.
