Knoxville June 8^th 1797 Tennessee Sir My last letter to you was dated the 2^d Instant enclosing the account of Capt Rich Sparks with my remarks I now enclose you duplicate of my letter of the 19^th ulto to which I request your attention The bearer Ensign William P. Smith has charge of the sum of Twenty two Thousand Eight hundred & Sixteen dollars &c being the balt due General Sevier & his Brigade for services in the year 1793 which heretofore have been deemed unauthorized & for which appropriations were passed last Session of Congress. I have extracted from your estimates of me services in this year 1793 those under the command General Sevier and now enclose the same to you your government— I have noted opposite those already paid and for which the funds were found amounting to Six thousand six hundred Nine lars &c which leaves a balance of Twenty Two Thou[sand] eight hundred sixteen dollars &c, the sum now rem[undecipherable] In making the payments you will guard against impositions on the soldiers as much as lies in your power. An abstract of your payments with the vouch[ers] you will forward to this Office with a list of those remaining unpaid, helping this transaction [sepa]rate from any other & apply the money solely to the object— any remarks you deem necessary on those remaining unpaid you will be pleased to communicate, requisite proof of the applicants' persons or by power of Attorney having served the period which they claim you are acquainted with, it is therefore not necessary for me to be particular on that head as well as any other relating to the payments.— W. Smith has received his Pay & Subsistence up to the end of may 1797 and has received one hundred and forty five dollars in advance, I mention this that you may be informed of the situation his accounts should any event make it necessary for you to be acquainted therewith.
