[No. I.] *Extract of a letter from the Secretary of War to Brigadier General James Wilkinson, dated War-Office, 9th June, 1797.* YESTERDAY the Secretary of State received letters from Mr. Ellicott, by which it would appear that ımples on the part of Governor Gayofo had retarded the cuation of the Posts. Thefe [strikethrough: ruples] or objections are, first, That in his nion the forts ought to be demolifhed; 2d, That he ught it neceffary to continue his force in that quarter the claims of Spanifh fubjects to lands fhould be adled by negociation. As to the firft, our Officer may be inftructed to a- to the demolition of the works if infifted on. As to fecond, he will affure the Governor that he is authoized to fay, that no perfon fhall be difturbed in his pofeffion or property till an opportunity has been afforded to pply to Congrefs, and that they may rely upon their aims being adjufted upon the moft equitable principles. It is to be prefumed, that on receiving thefe explantions, the Spanifh garrifons will be withdrawn. If, nwever, contrary to expectation, this fhould not happen ur officer is to take a fecure pofition, but not fo near ›rm as to give any caufe to the Spanifh garrifons to ap- rehend infult or injury."—
