[Letter from the Accountant of the Department of War to David Henley a.W.D. Knoxville Tennessee Dated 8 June 1797] Accountants Office June 8^th 1797 Sir My last letter to you was the 2^d Instant enclosing the Account of Cap^t Richard Sparks with my remarks. I now inclose you duplicate of my letter of the 19^th Ulto to which I request your attention. The bearer Ensⁿ W^m P. Smith has charge of the sum of Twenty two Thousand Eight Hundred & Sixteen Dollars and [undecipherable]/100 being the Balance remaining due to General Sevier & his Brigade for services in this year 1793— which heretofore have been deemed unauthorized, and for which appropriations were passed last Session of Congress— I have extracted from your Estimate of Militia services in the year 1793 those under the Command of Gen^l Sevier, and now inclose the same to you for your government.— I have noted opposite those already paid, and for which the funds were forwarded, amounting to Six Thousand Six hundred and nine Dollars [undecipherable]/100 which leaves a Balance of Twenty two Thousand eight hundred & Sixteen Dollars & [undecipherable]/100 the sum now remitted.— In making the Payments you will guard against imposition on the Soldiers as much as lies in your power. An Abstract of your payments with the Vouchers to this Office with a list of those remaining unpaid, keeping this transaction separate from any other and apply the money solely to this object. Any remarks you deem necessary on those remaining unpaid you will be pleased to communicate. The military proof of the applicants personally or by Power of attorney, having served the period for which they claim, you are acquainted with, it is therefore not necessary for me to be particular on that head, as well as any other relating to the Payments. M^r Smith has received his pay and subsistence to the end of May 1797 and has received One hundred & forty five Dollars in advance, I mention this that you may be informed of the situation of his Account, should any event make it necessary for you to be acquainted therewith. The inclosed Letter for Cap^t Sparks you will be pleased to deliver to him, and inform him that his Recruiting accounts are under examination and there appears a considerable Deficiency of Vouchers, the particulars of which he will receive when the examination is compleated.— I am Sir Your very Obd Serv^t [Wm Simmons] Acct.
