May 1797 Major Craig being absent, I acknowledge, Sir, the receipt of yours to him, of the 19^th Cur^t with an enclosure for Daniel McLean, late a Captain in the Services of the United States and the Presidents Speech to Congress. I believe Cap. McLean is not now in Town, but his letter will be attended to and the result communicated to you without delay; and were I to hazard a conjecture, it would be, that the U.
