to the Governor of Georgia Circular Dec 25 1797
On friday the 22d inst a little after dark, at a camp on the waters of Clele river, on the path from a few miles from the mouth, and west side of Oconee about 12 or 15 miles from fort Wilkinson a party of 5 Indians arriving at their fire were fired upon by five whitemen, by whom one Indian was killed by two balls pasing thro his body, three others dangerously wounded the party of whites after discharging their pieces took to their horses & rode off without farther molestation then went westerly, killed — river on a path for the Oconee towards Georgia Col. Hawkins the superintendent also went out with a party on the first alarm desined me to inform you. Both of these circumstances by post that facts are detailed from. The information of the Bird Tails boy an influential chief of the Creek nation one of the wounded Indians is a recompense effort on the part of the nation for removing the line between the State of Georgia & the Creek Nations.
